Preoperative education & testing
Once your pre-operative tests are completed and your surgeon knows that you are a good candidate for surgery, you will attend 1 pre-operative education class that last for 4 hours at St. Joseph. A registered dietician will describe the dietary progression which you will have to follow post surgery. During the first 6 months after surgery you will progress through the following food phases: liquids, pureed foods, soft foods, a modified regular diet and finally a fairly regular diet. The dietician will answer your questions and give specific information on which foods will be allowed and which foods may not be tolerated after surgery.
The hospital experience, signs and symptoms of complications and the importance of exercise will also be covered. You will have to pass a pre-operative test to demonstrate that you understand the information you will need to succeed with your new anatomy. The St. Joseph Pharmacy Department will review your list of medications and advise you of any changes, which will be necessary after you leave the hospital. In most cases, patients decrease or eliminate most medications after surgery. We have added the wellness program to encourage patients to exercise. You have a lifetime membership in the pool and gym.
You will also receive specific information to assist you in getting registered for surgery at St. Joseph Hospital.
